New York, New York: the show came back to town! Even during these difficult times for the fashion industry, New York Fashion Week featured almost the regular number of couture houses, with a total of 75 brands. Still, the atmosphere this year reflected the current sober mood by presenting a particularly subtle elegance.
First of all, the collections were generally smaller than usual, often consisting of only 25 to 30 dresses. Secondly, we could see designer coming together in order to spread the costs of the organizational fees. Lastly, most of the invitation lists were smaller than in the past: for example, Marc Jacobs had 700 guests, compared to 2000 last year. Yet, his overall message was still about smiling in the face of the crisis: he presented a full collection of 60 pieces with bright colors and lots of accessories.
Even Michael Bloomberg, the Mayor of New York City, did his best to support the industry in these difficult times. He announced that the Fall 2010 Fashion Week would be held in a new venue:
The inauguration was held in honor of the Heart Foundation, which was symbolized by the red dresses of Yigal Azrouel.
It seems like almost everyone is embracing a more austere style this season. Colors are plain, and details exist more in the cuts than in opulent decorative artifacts. There is also a slight constructivist approach, which provides practical luxury through couture patterns and humble color statements like white, gray and black.
In her collection, Donna Karan revisited her central themes. She sought to provide women with the longevity of classical style, colors and materials. On the other hand, Carlos Miele, who resents the need for structure, brought his architectural experiences into his designs.
