About Play and Games

In order to write about Play, one must adopt, before anything else, a rather humorous attitude, a state of mind that can harmonize with the primary definition of playing. For the person who likes games, everything can be turned into one.
Playing is acting with the body and spirit, following the rhythm and needs of an intrinsic pleasure and wellbeing. Play is a subtle state of mind that allows us to disconnect from reality.
Playing has become completely accepted and even celebrated over the nearly 60 yearlong history of teaching through games. The biggest change occurred in the 50s, when education became mandatory and free. Classes started accepting more students and, more importantly, they became socially diverse. Games seemed necessary for a quick general understanding, and started being mass-produced. It was at that time that they began having user manuals and several components in the form of kits. A new industry was born, and since then games and toys have known how to make the world revolve around them.
Psychology started to intervene in pedagogic methods, and developmental stages were established. Fernand Nathan created a system centered on education levels and proposed specific games for each age group. These advances were further strengthened with the invention of plastic: toys and games became cheaper, lighter, vividly colored, almost unbreakable and more hygienic.
Following this association with psychology, games became viewed as therapeutic and as perfect tools for reeducation. From then on, many groups of children were taught in this type of pedagogic environment: children with physical or mental handicaps, children with learning difficulties and children who had trouble socializing all started participating in education programs ruled primarily by play.
